…as the symbols of our faith surround us, we are reminded of the book of Hebrews, which tells us that a “great cloud of witnesses” surrounds us, setting both the pathway and the proof of God’s grace and providence. These are but a few of the symbols of our faith.

The Cross
of Christ is the classical form of the
Roman Cross like that upon which Jesus was put to death. The Romans used various forms of the
cross, all designed to maximize pain, longetivity of torture, and
shamefulness. The cross was meant
to strike fear into the hearts of Rome’s enemies, and prideful strength into
the heart of the legions.
The Sash
on the cross reminds of the days of
commemoration we are observing. For
example, the red sash of Palm Sunday reminds us that we are awaiting the
morning of His glorious resurrection (Easter Morning).
The Chi-Rho
or the XP, as it looks in English, is
often seen in Christian churches across denominations. It is considered the most prevalently
used “monogram” of Jesus Christ, being composed of the first two Greek letters
of His title. It is a symbol of
the victorious Christ.
The Candle-light
represents Christ. Christ is the Light of the world. In a world which seeks and claims
enlightenment from self-derived sources, God gives enlightenment, Light, only
in the Person, the Sacrifice, and the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
The Bread
of Christian communion represents the
body of Jesus Christ, sacrificed to pay the price for our sins.
The Cup
of Christian communion represents the
blood of Christ, for as the Apostle Paul tells us, “without the shedding of
blood, there is no remission of sins”.
